Laparoscopic Surgeries are minimally invasive surgeries that have the assistance of a video camera and thin instruments. The surgeries are known for less post operative discomfort, quicker recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and smaller scars.

Laparoscopic surgeries can be used to treat many different gynecology conditions. Some of these medical conditions are intrauterine fibroid, endometriosis, pelvic floor prolapse, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, etc.

If you are considering a hysterectomy here are some facts you need to know. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the governing body of all board certified obstetricians and gynecologists) recommends a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy over any other method if at all possible.

It is the least invasive type of hysterectomy and has a very short recovery time as well as a short hospital stay. If a vaginal hysterectomy is not appropriate for you according to your doctor, then a total abdominal hysterectomy would be the next preferred method. Both types are also more cost effective and take less time in the operating room than the Da Vinci.

Number one on the new release on the ACOG's Choosing Wisely list (March 2016), Gynecologist should avoid using robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign gynecologic disease when it is feasible to use a conventional laparoscopic or vaginal approach.
